Mackinac Island is a charming Great Lakes destination where time stands still. Located in the Straits of Mackinac, it connects Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. Cars are banned, so horse-drawn carriages travel its streets, and its perimeter road is the only U.S. highway without motor vehicles. Over 80% of the island is a state park, preserving landmarks like the Grand Hotel, Fort Mackinac, and scenic wilderness.
Detroit, located on a strait connecting the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence Seaway, is a city rich in culture. In 2015, it became the first U.S. city named a UNESCO “City of Design” for its creative urban development. Founded in 1701 as a fort, Detroit grew into the center of the U.S. automobile industry. Today, it’s also famous as the birthplace of Motown, a mix of "motor" and "town." The city’s waterfront features impressive postmodern and art deco skyscrapers.
Point Pelee is a scenic peninsula extending into Lake Erie from Ontario, narrowing to a fine point before meeting the water. It is home to woodlands and the largest freshwater marshes in the Great Lakes. Declared a national park in 1918, it is also safeguarded by the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty protecting wetlands. Positioned at the crossroads of two major bird migration routes, it has recorded around 350 species. Boardwalks invite visitors to explore its diverse landscape of open vistas and wave-swept shores.
Port Colborne proudly proclaims itself the “Gateway to Navigation.” It is also the gateway to North America’s largest and most powerful cascade, Niagara Falls. Epic in its scope and volume, the falls hurl 42 million gallons of water down 20 stories every minute. Its mile-wide length straddles the Canadian and US borders and is split by islands into three smaller cataracts: Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls.
